The University of Pennsylvania Men’s Basketball program faced an immediate disadvantage in their Round of 64 matchup with Illinois. Beyond entering the field as a No. 14 seed to the Fighting Illini’s No. 3, Penn played without lead scorer Ethan Roberts, sidelined on the eve of the postseason with his second concussion of the 2025-26 campaign.

Unanimous All-Ivy pick TJ Power dealt with an illness all week and was a game-time decision and, while the Quakers managed to stay within striking distance in the first half, Illinois’ offense proved too much for the Ivy League champs as the game went on, a 65-point second half onslaught powering the Illini to a 105-70 win.

The Penn band maintained a chip on their shoulder as Illinois pulled away, taunting their opponents with a chant that promoted their university’s prestige: “that’s alright, that’s okay, you’re gonna work for us someday!” Yahoo Sports posted a video of the encounter to Twitter, one that reached more than 1.9 million viewers in the first 13 hours after posting.

The reactions rolled in even faster, with some fans leaning into the villain role. Illinois fans quickly pointed out the prestige of their own university, and many Penn alumni called out the band, telling them to lose with grace. After winning an Ivy League title during their first season under Penn alumnus Fran McCaffery, the Quakers are a strong pick to continue playing the villain in the coming years.
