Villanova Women’s Basketball, Jasmine Bascoe Blow Out Towson
Villanova Women’s Basketball blew the doors off Towson in their preseason opener on Friday, Oct. 24, winning 79-54 at the Finneran Pavilion behind a 32-point outburst from sophomore guard Jasmine Bascoe.
Bascoe, who earned a selection to the preseason All-Big East Second Team, checked out with more than seven minutes to play after nailing a three-point shot to cross the 30-point barrier. She finished her day making 11 of 19 shots, including seven of ten from three, adding three rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Freshman forward Brooke Bender was the only other Wildcat to finish in double figures, shooting 4-of-7 from three on the way to a 14 point, eight rebound evening. Villanova’s bench contributed 25 points as the Wildcats poured it on from beyond the arc, making more of their threes (15-of-28) than they did from two-point range (13-of-27).
‘Cats Start Hot
That red-hot shooting began in the opening period, when the Wildcats nailed six of 12 three-point attempts on the way to a 22-11 lead. Even with that hot start, Villanova showed plenty of rust offensively. The Wildcats committed 19 turnovers, including seven in the first ten minutes alone, a factor that helped keep Towson in the game despite a brutal 36 percent clip from the field (23.5 percent from three). The Tigers’ saving grace was the charity stripe, where they made 14-of-20 attempts.
Villanova also excelled on the offensive glass, pulling down 22 second chances on the way to a 48-26 rebounding advantage. The Tigers reeled off a 10-0 run midway through the third period, trimming the deficit to 46-32, but they never had a legitimate chance to make it back into the game.
Villanova Women’s Basketball will continue their preseason slate with a scrimmage at FDU set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, their last tune-up before the regular season begins.
