Villanova Reaction: Wildcats Playing Aggressive Basketball
Villanova Men’s Basketball officially began the Kevin Willard era on Monday, Nov. 3, losing a dogfight against No. 8 BYU in Las Vegas in their 2025-26 season opener. The Wildcats showed plenty of fight, erasing a 14 point second half deficit and taking the lead with under six minutes to play, but their offense died there, a young team’s inexperience on full display as the Cougars closed them out.
In other circumstances, a 71-66 loss to a top ten team in the country might feel heartbreaking, but as a season opener played more than 2,000 miles away from home, the Wildcats showed plenty of positives. Perhaps most interesting was the reaction from opposing fans, who complained about how easy to dislike this iteration of the Wildcats are. As the saying goes, it’s better to be feared than loved, and a team predicated on aggressive defense that gets into their opponents’ heads could become a winning brand for Villanova under Willard.
Some Villanova fans, meanwhile, couldn’t help but notice similarities to the Kyle Neptune era, with the Wildcats fighting to take a late lead before letting the win slip out of their grasp. Here’s the reaction from fans and media alike.

A tremendous night for the freshmen in Las Vegas.
And Villanova?
The Cats continue to look like a team that will be very competitive in the Big East under Kevin Willard. https://t.co/gbRIjz56JN

I don’t think I will ever get used to a Villanova team that can’t hit free throws.

Villanova in an ugly, close. rock fight to open their season, but since they hired a good coach it’s against a ranked team instead of like, Columbia. Improvement!

The toughest part about this game might not even be the loss… it’s that we went 8/15 from the free throw line 😢 (it’s Game 1, let’s see what happens down the road with the free throw shooting) pic.twitter.com/3GBi80O0XD

Opening night for college basketball and since we’re all friends here I hope that all you Butler, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Seton Hall, Villanova, and Xavier fans have great success in out-of-conference play.

BYU might have the Mormon Church backing it, but Villanova has the Pope.
