Villanova Men’s Basketball officially began the Kevin Willard era on Monday, Nov. 3, losing a dogfight against No. 8 BYU in Las Vegas in their 2025-26 season opener. The Wildcats showed plenty of fight, erasing a 14 point second half deficit and taking the lead with under six minutes to play, but their offense died there, a young team’s inexperience on full display as the Cougars closed them out.

In other circumstances, a 71-66 loss to a top ten team in the country might feel heartbreaking, but as a season opener played more than 2,000 miles away from home, the Wildcats showed plenty of positives. Perhaps most interesting was the reaction from opposing fans, who complained about how easy to dislike this iteration of the Wildcats are. As the saying goes, it’s better to be feared than loved, and a team predicated on aggressive defense that gets into their opponents’ heads could become a winning brand for Villanova under Willard.

Some Villanova fans, meanwhile, couldn’t help but notice similarities to the Kyle Neptune era, with the Wildcats fighting to take a late lead before letting the win slip out of their grasp. Here’s the reaction from fans and media alike.
