Villanova in the Pros: Donte DiVincenzo Dodges Surgery

Donte DiVincenzo, current Minnesota Timberwolves guard and 2018 Final Four Most Outstanding Player with the Villanova Wildcats, won’t need surgery for a toe injury suffered on Wednesday, Jan. 15 against Golden State.

DiVincenzo enjoyed one of his best performances of the season during the game against the Warriors, dropping 28 points — his best since joining Minnesota this offseason — but suffered an injury to his left big toe during the waning moments of the 116-115 loss.

Initially ruled out indefinitely with a grade three sprain, indicating a severe (or even full tear) of the ligaments in the affected digit, DiVincenzo and the Timberwolves sought a second opinion that indicated a “stable turf toe injury with a partial tear of the plantar ligament,” per a team report. DiVincenzo, placed in a walking boot following the initial injury, will undergo reevaluation in three weeks. It’s unclear whether the second opinion confirmed a grade three sprain or a milder injury.

That’s not to say that he’ll return to the court within that time frame, but his current timetable seems much better than the initial reports indicated.

After beginning the season coming off the bench for the Timberwolves, DiVincenzo started six games in a row prior to the injury, finally hitting a groove in his new home. Minnesota currently occupies the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference, so if the postseason began today, they’d need to make their way through the play-in tournament in order to keep their season alive. As such, a potentially expedited timeline for DiVincenzo’s return comes as a massive boon for the team.
