Villanova Men’s Basketball couldn’t mount a comeback soon enough on Friday, Jan. 24, falling 87-74 to Marquette in Milwaukee.

The Golden Eagles led by as much as 15 points in the second half, but the Wildcats cut the deficit to 80-72 thanks to an Eric Dixon three-pointer with 1:07 to play. Needless to say, they didn’t have enough time to close any further.

Dixon only managed three points in the first half but managed to finish with a respectable 18. Senior guard Jordan Longino took up the slack, shattering his career best with a 27-point outburst: prior to the game, he’d never even cleared the 20 point barrier.

Tyler Perkins supplanted Wooga Poplar in the starting lineup as a result of the latter’s ejection on Monday, Jan. 20 against Georgetown, putting up seven points in 30 minutes.

Defensively, the Wildcats managed to limit potential Wooden Award winner Kam Jones to 16 points, below his season average, but Stevie Mitchell — of Wilson High School in Reading, Pa. — dropped 21 points and Chase Ross rebounded for 18 after a pair of sparse shooting performances.

The Wildcats managed to go blow for blow with Marquette early thanks to threes from Dixon and Jhamir Brickus, the latter of which put Villanova ahead 8-5. They never led again, however, with the Golden Eagles building a steady lead as the game went on, taking a ten point lead into the half with a buzzer beating three from Royce Parham.

Villanova closed within six points after the half, but the Golden Eagles kept them at arm’s length from there.

Up next, Villanova will take a week off from live game action before hosting the Creighton Blue Jays at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1.
