Phillies vs. Angels Preview: Pitching Matchup and Props for Aug. 28

The Philadelphia Phillies will continue their west coast road swing on Friday, Aug. 28, taking on the Los Angeles Angels beginning at 9:38 p.m. on NBC Sports Philadelphia. The Phillies (74-60) hit a speed bump at the beginning of their road trip, dropping two of three against the Mariners. The Angels (52-82) are 3-7 in their last ten games and should provide an easier test as Philadelphia prepares for a National League focused slog once the calendar flips to September.

Expect sunny skies and a first pitch temperature around 88 degrees. The sun will set within 45 minutes of the game starting, but the thermometer will stay north of 80 degrees throughout. Humidity will sit between 50 and 60 percent, while a 7 to 13 mile per hour breeze out of the south-southwest could help generate some offense early on before dying down in the late innings.

Pitching Matchup

The Phillies will send rookie right-hander Andrew Painter (6.04 ERA, 92.1 innings pitched, 1.48 WHIP and 7.70 K/9) to the mound in a bid to build on the best start of his big league career. Los Angeles will counter with lefty Reid Detmers (3.62 ERA, 149 innings pitched, 1.06 WHIP and 10.39 K/9), who puts on a similar performance against batters on both sides of the plate.

That’s good news for the lefty-heavy Phillies’ lineup. On top of that, they’ve dominated Detmers in limited opportunities, slashing .385/.515/.538 with a double, a homer and seven walks in 33 plate appearances. Trea Turner has both the extra base hits and a pair of walks; Luis Arraez has the most experience against Detmers dating back to his time in the American League, going 4-for-7 with two free passes. Brandon Marsh also sees the ball well out of Detmers’ hand, drawing two walks in as many plate appearances.

Kyle Schwarber (0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts) has struggled in his limited duels with Detmers. On the whole, the Angels’ lefty does a solid job of limiting hard contact despite his struggles. A double play ball or two could turn into a major momentum shift.

Painter, on the other hand, has yet to face the Angels. His strikeout total sits at 5.5, a tempting bet given the Angels’ struggles and his recent resurgence, but the lack of a track record is troublesome. Turner is a solid total bases pick given his history against Detmers, as is Luis Arraez.
